In the shadowed moon's cold embrace, On Halloween, in this eerie place, Witches cackle, and spirits rise, Beneath the blood-red moon's dark eyes.

Jack-o'-lanterns flicker, grin so wide, Their fiery gazes from inside, Haunted whispers in the breeze, Creeping 'neath the twisted trees.

Ghosts and ghouls, they dance and wail, Their mournful cries, a chilling tale, In the haunted night, beware your fear, For Halloween's the night they're near.

Bats take flight on ghostly wings, As the witch's cauldron softly sings, Skeletons rattle, and owls take flight, On this haunting, moonlit night.

A pumpkin's grin, a spectral sight, On this eve, when dark meets light, So beware as Halloween draws near, The spirits and spooks are here, I fear.

Stingy Jack is a legendary figure in Irish folklore, and his story is often associated with the origin of the tradition of carving pumpkins, known as jack-o'-lanterns, for Halloween. The story of Stingy Jack goes like this:

The Legend of Stingy Jack:

Stingy Jack was a clever but miserly man who was known for his devious and manipulative ways. He was notorious for playing tricks on his friends and even the devil himself. One fateful night, Stingy Jack invited the devil to have a drink with him. Not wanting to pay for the drinks, Jack convinced the devil to transform into a coin to cover the cost. However, instead of using the coin to pay, Jack decided to keep it and placed it next to a silver cross in his pocket. The cross prevented the devil from transforming back into his true form.

Jack eventually released the devil, but only after making him promise not to claim Jack's soul when he died. Many years later, Jack died, and when he arrived at the gates of heaven, he was turned away because of his misdeeds. He then sought refuge in the underworld, but the devil, true to his word, refused to let him in as well. Jack was left to wander the dark void between the realms, with only a glowing coal to light his way.

To make his wandering a bit more bearable, Jack placed the coal inside a hollowed-out turnip, creating an early version of the jack-o'-lantern. The Irish began to refer to this figure as "Jack of the Lantern" or "Jack O'Lantern."

Why Pumpkins Are Carved for Halloween:

The tradition of carving pumpkins for Halloween was brought to the United States by Irish immigrants. When they arrived, they found that pumpkins were more readily available and easier to carve than turnips, which were traditionally used in Ireland. Pumpkins soon became the popular choice for creating jack-o'-lanterns because of their size and the ease with which they could be carved.

Over time, the tradition of carving pumpkins became an integral part of American Halloween celebrations. Today, people of all ages carve pumpkins into various spooky or creative designs, and they are prominently displayed during the Halloween season to add to the festive and eerie atmosphere. The practice of carving pumpkins has evolved into a beloved Halloween tradition in many parts of the world.
